The Companies House Basic Company Data product contains millions of UK company records. Extracting businesses belonging to particular SIC codes or industries can require processing very large CSV datasets and writing custom scripts.

The Companies House SIC Database Compiler – Windows EXE + Python/BAT is designed to simplify that process.

Download the official Companies House Basic Company Data snapshot, place the ZIP file or files into the supplied data folder, launch the compiler and choose the SIC codes or industries you require.

The software processes the Companies House source data and creates structured Microsoft Excel databases organised by SIC code.

Two Editions Included

Every purchase includes both versions of the software.

Standalone Windows EXE Edition

The easiest option for most users.

The package includes:

Python does not need to be installed separately when using this edition.

Microsoft Excel is also not required to generate the .xlsx databases, although Excel or another compatible spreadsheet application will be needed to open them.

Python / Windows BAT Edition

The complete Python edition is also supplied for users who prefer to run the compiler through Python and Windows BAT launchers.

This edition requires:

Python 3.9 or later

and:

XlsxWriter

The package includes dependency information, installation assistance and a requirements.txt file.

Works with Single and Multipart Companies House Downloads

The compiler supports both common Companies House Basic Company Data download formats.

For example, the single-file version:

and multipart releases such as:

BasicCompanyData-YYYY-MM-DD-part1_7.zip

through to:

BasicCompanyData-YYYY-MM-DD-part7_7.zip

When multipart data is supplied, all parts are treated as one complete monthly snapshot.

The compiler checks that all required parts are present before processing them.

Old File and Snapshot Detection

Leaving an older Companies House snapshot in the software folder can easily result in the wrong data being processed.

Version 1.1 includes snapshot detection designed to identify recognised Companies House snapshot dates and distinguish older data from the most recent local release.

If several snapshots are present, the software avoids silently combining them.

The package also includes a dedicated:

CHECK_DATA_SNAPSHOT.bat

utility so the source files can be checked before beginning a large compilation.

Where internet access is available, the compiler can also compare the local snapshot with information available from the official Companies House download service to help identify whether a newer release is available.

Historical snapshots can still be processed intentionally where required.

Search by SIC Code or Industry Name

You do not need to know the exact SIC code beforehand.

The compiler allows industry-based searches such as:

roofing, construction, property management, software, accountancy, electrical installation, restaurants, cleaning, recruitment and many other industries.

Matching SIC classifications are displayed so the required industry can be selected.

The software can also suggest related SIC codes to help identify neighbouring or complementary industries.

Compile One, Several or All SIC Codes

You can create:

one SIC database, several selected SIC databases, or all SIC databases represented in the selected Companies House snapshot.

The Compile All option automatically processes every qualifying SIC classification detected in the source data.

Checks All Four SIC Positions

Companies House allows companies to report more than one business activity.

The compiler therefore checks:

SICCode.SicText_4

A company is included when the selected SIC occurs in any of these four positions.

If a company operates across several industries, it may legitimately appear in several different SIC databases.

The same company is not duplicated more than once within one individual SIC database.

Active Company Filtering

By default, the compiler includes records where the Companies House source status equals exactly:

Active

This avoids unintentionally mixing other company-status categories into the standard output.

Full Companies House Source Fields

The generated databases preserve the available Companies House source fields rather than reducing the output to only company name and address.

Depending on the Companies House source release, these can include company name, company number, registered-office information, company category, company status, country of origin, incorporation date, accounts information, confirmation-statement information, mortgage or charge information, SIC classifications, previous company names and Companies House reference URI.

Some source fields may naturally be blank where they do not apply to a particular company.

Excel Output

The software generates Microsoft Excel .xlsx files with descriptive SIC-based filenames.

The output can be used for market research, data analysis, supplier research, competitor research, B2B market sizing, internal prospecting datasets and industry segmentation.

Restart and Resume Support

Large Companies House datasets can take time to process.

The compiler records progress and recognises completed SIC files for the same snapshot.

If a long compilation is interrupted, successfully completed files can therefore be retained and skipped when processing resumes.

Snapshot-Specific Output

Different Companies House monthly releases are kept separately.

This helps prevent output created from an older snapshot from being mistaken for output generated from a newer dataset.

Reusable with Future Compatible Monthly Snapshots

The compiler is designed to be reused when subsequent compatible Companies House Basic Company Data snapshots become available.

This means you do not need to purchase a new SIC database every month simply to refresh the source data.

Download the latest compatible Companies House snapshot and run it through the compiler again.

Future compatibility cannot be guaranteed if Companies House materially changes its file format, field structure or delivery system.

Windows Security / SmartScreen Notice

The standalone Windows executable is currently distributed without a commercial code-signing certificate.

Windows Defender SmartScreen or other security software may therefore display an Unknown Publisher or similar warning when the EXE is first opened.

This does not necessarily indicate that the file is malicious.

SHA-256 checksums are supplied so buyers can verify the integrity of the distributed package.

An SSD is strongly recommended for large-scale processing.

Performance depends on processor speed, storage speed, available memory, number of SIC codes selected and the size of the Companies House snapshot.
