Renewable energy is easy to talk about in terms of gigawatts, government targets and new technologies.
But behind all of those numbers are real businesses.
Someone has to survey the property. Someone has to fit the solar panels, install the heat pump, connect the battery, commission the system, maintain it and answer the phone when something stops working.
So we decided to look a little more closely at the businesses actually doing that work.
As part of our research for the Bitrixa UK Renewable Energy Installer & Supplier Database, we analysed 7,241 renewable-energy businesses operating across the UK and related jurisdictions, covering Solar PV, heat pumps, battery storage, EV charging, solar thermal, biomass, wind and other renewable technologies.
And the picture that emerged was more interesting than simply “there are lots of solar installers”.
In particular, the data suggests that the UK installer market is increasingly a multi-technology ecosystem, with solar, batteries, heating and EV infrastructure frequently crossing over within the same businesses.
Here is what we found.
The UK renewable-energy business landscape at a glance
Our final dataset contains 7,241 qualified businesses across 33 structured fields.

Before going any further, there is an important distinction to make.
These 7,241 records should not be interpreted as an official count of every renewable-energy company operating in the UK. The dataset was created by consolidating, qualifying and enriching businesses identified through multiple public and official sources. It is therefore best viewed as a large research snapshot of the installer and supplier landscape, rather than a national census.
With that said, a dataset of this size can still tell us quite a lot.
Nearly half of the businesses are multi-technology
Perhaps the most striking finding is that 3,605 businesses — 49.8% of the entire dataset — are classified primarily as Multi-Technology.
That matters.
The renewable-energy installer of 2026 is not necessarily a company that does one thing and one thing only.
A solar installer may now offer battery storage. An electrical contractor may install solar, batteries and EV chargers. A heat-pump specialist may also work with solar PV. Some businesses effectively provide a broader home-energy package rather than a single renewable product.
Compare the primary classifications:
3,605 businesses are Multi-Technology, compared with 2,236 primarily Solar PV businesses and 1,073 primarily Heat Pump businesses.
EV Charging accounts for another 127 primary classifications, while smaller specialist groups include wind, biomass, battery storage and solar thermal.
This does not mean those smaller technologies are barely represented. Primary classification simply tells us the main category assigned to each company.
Once we look inside the broader Technologies / Services field, the picture becomes much richer.
Solar PV remains the common thread
Solar is everywhere in this dataset.
Although 2,236 companies are classified primarily as Solar PV businesses, Solar PV appears somewhere within the wider technologies and services of 5,728 records.
That is roughly 79% of the entire dataset.
In other words, limiting a search to companies labelled simply “Solar PV” would miss thousands of businesses that offer solar alongside other technologies.
Battery storage shows the same effect.
Only 17 companies have Battery Storage as their primary classification, yet battery storage appears within the broader service information of 2,864 businesses.
And the connection between solar and storage is especially noticeable.
We identified 2,819 businesses where both Solar PV and Battery Storage appear in the technology/service mix.
That is almost 39% of all 7,241 businesses analysed.
This overlap makes intuitive commercial sense. Solar generation and energy storage increasingly form part of the same customer conversation, so businesses capable of supplying or installing both have an obvious reason to broaden their offering.
The data suggests this is not a niche crossover. It is a substantial part of the installer landscape.
Solar, batteries and heat pumps are crossing over too
The overlaps do not stop at batteries.
1,047 businesses in the dataset include both Solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps within their recorded technologies or services.
Air Source Heat Pumps themselves appear within the service information of 2,204 businesses, while Ground / Water Source Heat Pumps appear in 621.
That points towards another important characteristic of this market: the boundaries between electrical energy, heating and home-energy technologies are becoming less tidy.
From a customer’s point of view, solar panels, batteries, EV charging and low-carbon heating may be separate purchases.
From an installer’s point of view, however, they can increasingly be complementary services offered to the same homeowner, developer or commercial customer.
For manufacturers, distributors, software companies and other businesses selling into the renewable-energy sector, this matters enormously.
Searching for “solar installers” may no longer be enough.
The better question may be: what combination of technologies does this installer actually work with?
Heat-pump businesses show an unusually strong MCS connection
Another particularly interesting result appears when we compare primary technologies with MCS directory matching.
Across the complete dataset, 5,443 businesses were matched to official MCS directory information, representing 75.2% of all records.
But that percentage varies dramatically by business type.
Of the 1,073 businesses primarily classified as Heat Pumps, 1,069 were matched to the official MCS directory.
That is approximately 99.6%.
Among businesses primarily classified as Solar PV, the equivalent figure was 1,122 of 2,236, or roughly 50.2%.
That difference should not be read as meaning that half of UK solar installers are uncertified. Our Solar PV segment includes businesses identified from sources outside MCS, including suppliers and other solar-related businesses, so the two populations are not directly comparable.
It does, however, demonstrate why combining multiple sources produces a different view of the sector from using an MCS directory alone.
MCS covers technologies including Solar PV, solar heating, small wind, biomass, heat pumps, micro-CHP and battery storage. EV charging itself is not part of the listed technology scope, which also helps explain why an EV-focused business population behaves differently when measured against MCS records.
The market is overwhelmingly installer-led
One thing the data makes very clear is that this is primarily an installation market.
Of the 7,241 businesses analysed:
5,878 — 81.2% — are classified as installers.
Another 1,157 — 16.0% — operate as both installers and suppliers.
Only 206 businesses, or 2.8%, are classified purely as suppliers.
That split is significant for anyone trying to sell into the renewable-energy supply chain.
A manufacturer of batteries, inverters, mounting systems, heat-pump components or EV equipment does not simply have a relatively small group of wholesalers to think about. There is a much larger downstream network of installers influencing product choice, specifying systems and dealing directly with customers.
The same applies to businesses selling software, finance, insurance, training, recruitment, certification support or field-service technology.
The commercial opportunity is not confined to companies manufacturing renewable-energy hardware. There is a sizeable supporting business ecosystem around the installers themselves.
Where are all these businesses?
Renewable-energy businesses in the dataset are spread throughout the country, but the raw numbers are far from even.
The South East of England is the largest regional segment with 1,226 businesses, representing 16.9% of the dataset.
It is followed by the South West with 945, the East of England with 790, and the North West with 765.
Scotland contributes 593 businesses, Yorkshire and the Humber 548, the West Midlands 486 and Wales 464.
Interestingly, London accounts for just 329 records, or about 4.5% of the database.
This should not be interpreted as a measure of installer density or renewable adoption: the figures have not been normalised for population, number of households, geography or regional economic activity.
But the raw distribution is still useful.
It reinforces the fact that the renewable-energy installation market is not particularly London-centric. Businesses selling to installers need to think nationally and regionally rather than concentrating their efforts around the capital.
There are some interesting technology differences too.
Among companies primarily classified as Solar PV, the South West has the largest count at 341, narrowly ahead of the South East at 323.
Heat pumps look different.
Of the 1,073 primarily Heat Pump businesses, 263 are in the South East, meaning almost one quarter of that entire segment is located there in our dataset. The East of England follows with 159, then the South West with 127.
These differences could become particularly useful when planning sales territories, distributor relationships or regional marketing campaigns.
Why this installer market matters in 2026
The wider policy and deployment environment makes these businesses increasingly important.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero now publishes UK Solar PV deployment information monthly, with its Energy Trends series updated again on 30 July 2026. Solar deployment is therefore being tracked as a continuing, month-by-month part of the UK’s energy transition.
Heat pumps have also developed their own official deployment statistics series. DESNZ’s latest available quarterly release at the time of writing covers deployment to March 2026 and includes hydronic heat pumps up to 45kW across the UK.
There is a sizeable pipeline behind those numbers too.
Ofgem reported that by 30 June 2026, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme had received 135,500 voucher applications, with 87,266 vouchers redeemed and more than £613 million in grants paid since the scheme began.
Those figures are not directly comparable with our company database, but they provide useful context.
Demand for low-carbon technologies creates demand for people and businesses capable of specifying, installing and supporting them.
The installer network is therefore a crucial part of whether renewable-energy ambitions become real-world installations.
Good market data needs more than a company name and email address
One of the lessons from building this dataset was just how difficult the term “renewable-energy company” can be to define.
Is an electrician that installs solar and EV chargers a renewable-energy company?
What about a plumbing and heating business that has moved heavily into heat pumps?
Is a solar equipment manufacturer a supplier if it also has its own installation division?
What about a company primarily described as Solar PV but which also installs batteries, chargers and heat pumps?
The answer depends entirely on what you are trying to accomplish.
That is why useful market research needs more than a company name and an email address.
Within the Bitrixa dataset, businesses were classified by their role, primary technology, wider technologies and services, organisation type, region, MCS information and additional accreditation data.
Companies House information was also researched where a confident match could be established.
A total of 6,275 businesses — 86.7% of the dataset — were matched to a Companies House number.
Importantly, numbers were not simply guessed when a reliable match could not be established. Some businesses may operate as sole traders or trading names, while others have ambiguous or otherwise difficult-to-confirm company identities.
That distinction matters because a bigger spreadsheet is not automatically a better spreadsheet.
For market intelligence, knowing what you do not know can be just as useful as filling another cell.
What does the data tell us about the UK renewable-energy installer market?
The clearest takeaway is that the market is broader and more interconnected than individual technology labels suggest.
Solar PV remains the dominant thread running through the dataset, but a large proportion of solar businesses also work with batteries, EV charging, heating technologies or other renewable services.
Nearly half of the entire business population we analysed is best described as Multi-Technology.
At the same time, specialist segments remain important. Heat-pump installers show particularly strong representation within MCS data, and geographic patterns vary depending on the technology being examined.
For businesses trying to reach this market, that creates both an opportunity and a warning.
The opportunity is obvious: thousands of installers and related businesses sit between renewable-energy products and the end customer.
The warning is that “renewable-energy installers” is not one homogeneous audience.
A battery manufacturer, heat-pump distributor, solar wholesaler, EV charging provider, SaaS company and training organisation may all want to reach renewable-energy installers — but they should not necessarily be targeting the same companies.
Good targeting starts with understanding what each business actually does.
And that may be the most useful lesson in all 7,241 records.
